How it Works

OBX Treasure Hunt is an interactive scavenger hunt where you use text messages to answer questions about notable Outer Banks landmarks. Our treasure hunts allow you to compete with others all from your cell phone! The adventure game is all walking and perfect for a fun, family vacation activity.

Looking for something to do on the Outer Banks? Take a look at our available scavenger hunts, select the tour that interests you and explore the OBX in a new way with us!

Here’s How Our OBX Text Message Scavenger Hunts Work

Step #1

Select Your Hunt(s) & Purchase

Purchase your OBX Treasure Hunt from our site. You can select from our five hunts across the Outer Banks from Corolla to Manteo. Be sure to enter your cell phone number at checkout so we can alert you when your game is ready to begin!

Any phone that received SMS text messages is eligible to participate! You can complete your treasure hunt at any time of day, but be sure to check park hours if your treasure hunt is located at the Wright Brothers Memorial or Jockey’s Ridge.

Step #2

Text Us When You’re Ready to Start

After you purchase your treasure hunt, you will receive a text message from OBX Treasure Hunt. When you’re ready to start exploring one of our locations, text “OK” to the phone number provided. Don’t say you’re ready until you arrive at your location! Our scavenger hunts are timed to place the fastest participants on the leaderboard.

OBX Treasure Hunt starting codes expire after 4 weeks. If you misplace your starting code, please contact contact@obxtreasurehunt.com and we’ll help you get back to hunting!

Step #3

Start Your Quest

Once you reply “OK” to our text message, the timed competition begins! You will receive 10 clues in numerical order. You must solve each clue to move on to the next. Send in the correct answer to move forward. If at any point you need help or get stuck, just send in the word “HINT”. We provide 3 hints per clue.

Step #4

Find Your Clues

Each text message in our hunt will ask you to answer questions by finding a clue. Hunts are designed to last for about one hour, but if you hustle you might need less time. Your goal should be to find as many answers as quickly as possible to top the leaderboard. Find them all without using any clues!

Step #5

Have a Blast!

Outer Banks Treasure Hunts are a great way to connect with friends and family. You might even see something you’ve never seen before! There’s no better way to see the exceptional sights of the Outer Banks.

We encourage you to explore and take as long as you need to complete your hunt. Stay safe and use your best judgment. We suggest you prepare for the elements by bringing a backpack with water, a snack, and sunscreen, just in case!

Happy Hunting!
